Isn’t it interesting how you keep busy and stay active until 9 or 10 p.m., even having dinner that late, in the summer months? But in the dead of winter, you put on your comfy pants, eat something hearty and hunker down in bed by 8 p.m.?
While we have already discussed ways to embrace a decline in mood and motivation, it might help to understand what really happens to your body in winter and how colder, darker days can affect your system.
There is science behind why it is more difficult to practice positive thinking and get regular exercise during January and February, especially if you live near a large body of water that creates cloud cover or produces lake effect snow. The same can be said if you live near or north of the 45th parallel. Known as the halfway point between the Equator and the North Pole, at this latitude, most people experience full-blown winter with 15 or more hours of darkness, temperatures below freezing and regular snowfall.
Prolonged lack of sun and cold weather can tax your body like any other source of energy-depleting stress, similar to fighting with your kids, being at odds with your spouse or feeling overwhelmed at work.
It unknowingly strains your mood as well as your metabolism. As your energy dips, your desire for food increases because your body is trying to replenish it. Plus, the cold shifts your body into “hibernation metabolism” and triggers cravings for sweets and carbs.
Darkness also causes your body’s internal clock to get out of whack by throwing off melatonin production. Melatonin is the primary hormone that governs your body’s sleep cycle. Melatonin works at night, synchronizing repair and a restful night’s sleep. It helps restore your energy for the next day. When melatonin levels or its production go haywire, it can lead to sleepless nights and cause you to feel like you are always dragging.
People also underestimate the power of the sun! It produces vitamin D and photon energy – both critical to health and wellbeing. The sun interacts with skin to make vitamin D, a nutrient severely deficient in the winter in northern climates.
There is a good bit of evidence that vitamin D deficiency plays a role in seasonal affective disorder (SAD), which can contribute to fatigue, food cravings, and other symptoms of depression. Vitamin D also is vital to calcium metabolism, proper immunity, good mood, and breast and prostate health.
In addition, the sun also produces photon energy, which is stored in cell membranes. Your ability to store and use this energy is based on the amount of omega 3 fatty acids in your diet. Omega 3 is often lacking in Western diets and can lead to the winter blues. Several studies also have confirmed that people with higher blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids are less likely to report symptoms of depression.
Rather than run to the doctor for a prescription for antidepressants, or try to will your lethargy away, there are some ways to counteract the season’s drain on your energy with supplements:
• Melatonin is one of the best cures for regulating your sleep and maintaining melatonin levels
• Vitamin D3 can be consumed in the form of dietary supplements in locales where the sun is sparse
• B vitamins also can help control stress and depression
• Essential fatty acids like omega 3, daily DHA or Leptinal can help get photon energy to your brain
• Squalene also delivers oxygen and photon energy, reduces dry or cracking skin, and helps with circulation, especially people who feel cold in their extremities
• Regular exercise, especially weight training, helps build muscle, boost your resting metabolism and balance hormones
Consult a health food store or nutritionist for other herbal remedies, proper dosages and when is the best time to take supplements. When the Moon is in Cancer it is a time of deep emotions. It’s a time when we can connect with people on a deeper level, especially with our families. It is a time when we yearn for peace and serenity. It is not a good time for change, as we will resist any kind of change during this period and we will be more attune with things that are familiar (notice that the root of the word “family” is “familiar”).
Anything you would want to do around the home now would be favored, especially making your home a more comfortable place. Also anything having to do with helping your family or nurturing your family is very beneficial. Family get-togethers can be very harmonious during this time, especially if “neediness” is not involved. People can tend to be a little more secretive and moody during this time and also overly-protective.
This can be a very healing time and a wonderful time to really connect with our deepest desires and what it is that drives us. Be very careful during this time about your stomach, gall bladder, and lymphatic system. Avoid over-eating, especially “comfort” foods. Give your family a big hug and tell them you love them.

You’ve hit the hump, surviving the shortest, darkest days of the year.
The Dec. 21st winter solstice signifies a gradual shift to more daylight, but temperatures continue to fall and snow to mount through February in most of the United States and Canada. Spring doesn’t officially arrive until March 20, meaning it’s time to find creative ways to stay physically active and mentally resilient.
Due to the lack of sunlight, many people suffer from depression, or seasonal affective disorder (SAD), during the winter months. However, research reveals low energy during winter is routine. It’s normal and natural to experience a slight seasonal variance in mood and behavior.
So don’t beat yourself up if you aren’t going, going, going all the time. Embrace the opportunity to rest.
Some, such as followers of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), see decreased energy in wintertime as a reflection of the season’s energy. Rising (yang) and falling (yin) energies cycle as the seasons change. Winter’s yin energy is quiet, slow, and reflective. As winter turns to spring, the bright, expansive and upbeat yang energy ushers in a season of rebirth and renewal.
Nature and the animal kingdom express universal energies by their patterns and behaviors, which are mirrored in the energies of the human body and human experience. Just think of the animals that grow a winter coat, pack on extra weight and hibernate. Remember your perennials that go dormant underground, but will sprout through dirt in the spring.
The same goes for humans. The season’s energy invites us to enjoy extra sleep and to savor comfort foods. The colder, inclement weather forces us to spend most of our time indoors, which can be a good thing because it also causes us to slow down, self-reflect and ponder our life’s purpose.
Here are some ways to mindfully manage difficult emotions, excessive eating and low energy during these months:
• Use the down time to focus on healing, letting go and cultivating new connections
• Set aside time to practice conscious breathing
• Find ways to check in with yourself and quiet the mind
• Incorporate restorative activities into daily routines
• Light scented candles or enjoy a hot bath with essential oils
• Build a fire in an indoor fireplace; enjoy the sounds, smells, warmth and light it radiates
• Curl up and get lost in a book
• Invite bright colors into living spaces
• Try gentle yoga, t’ai chi or stretching; commit to some form of regular movement
• Listen to relaxing music or soothing nature sounds
• Take a nap or cuddle with your child or pet
• Participate in physical and social activities that bring joy and meaning
• Find ways to enjoy the outdoors: Go on a nature walk, try snowshoeing or take pictures
• Play or do something you did as a kid: Ice skating, building a snowman, sledding
• Appreciate the cycle of the seasons and life

The gifts have been opened. A month of celebrating has come to an end. And the bills from all the entertaining and gift-giving, or the regular bills you put off to please your children or put on appearances, may be starting to roll in.
Kudos to you if you buy things on a cash-only basis. But sadly, debt is a dirty little secret most people are carrying – a burden that is likely weighing you down, creating problems in your relationships, and making you feel like you are perpetually living a lie. Being a slave to credit cards and other payments can feel like a noose around your neck.
Rather than harp on debt and make you feel worse, the focus of this post is to get you thinking about how you can begin to live more deliberately in 2014. Often, debt is a manifestation of a deeper problem. It’s like any other vice or addiction, or having an affair, or secretly gorging yourself at night. Maybe you have been trying to mask feelings of unworthiness or unhappiness, or you have some need to keep up with the Joneses, or shopping gives you a temporary “high” – like an alcoholic taking a drink or a drug addict taking a hit.
What does it mean to live deliberately? It means making conscious choices, once you have carefully considered the pros and cons. It means you stand in your truth and set limits with yourself and others. You don’t give your kids everything they want out of guilt, realizing they can handle the word “no” and you are preventing them from growing up to be self-entitled, superficial, spoiled adults.
You think about the consequences of your decisions. You stop living on autopilot or mindlessly paying with your credit card and quit buying things you don’t need to temporarily feel better. You clear out the clutter – mentally and spatially – knowing less is more when it comes to possessions that matter and negativity clogs your creativity. You get clear about your income versus expenses and figure out ways to cut costs and start living within your means. You save for what you want, and then decide if you really want it when it comes time to pull out those hard-earned greenbacks.
Living consciously means being fully, presently aware. If you buy a new car or a big house, you understand the yin and yang trade-offs before ever signing the loan. Any choice we make has opposite effects – one positive and one negative. The yin of a big house is it’s spacious, comfortable, impressive and likely in a safer neighborhood. The yang is that you have to work longer and harder to make the payment – or forego vacations and other fun since you have less “play” money. You sacrifice other parts of your life, like leisure and family time.
When you live connected to Source, and yourself, you are totally aware of the long-term consequences of your decisions. That’s why it’s critical to tune into your body and pay attention to how you feel when making a major decision. When you go through life making rash decisions, or live to accumulate material possessions, you skim the surface of life and continue to feel unfulfilled. You see only the immediate gratification of a new house or car, or how it will make you look to others. Then you wonder why you are stressed, sick and tired, trapped on the treadmill of work and spend, work and spend, or stuck in a job you hate. – Marla Miller

For most people during this time, friends become more important than family. More focus might be placed on people in general as opposed to individuals (social consciousness).

When the Moon is in Capricorn it’s a time of being dependable and following through. People will be working harder and it’s a wonderful time to really utilize your concentration and your focus.
Capricorn is continually striving for financial security, so making efforts along that line will be very good.
People may seem a little more stern during this time (as they are focused on their own concentrated efforts). But within the family, this is a time that brings out familial connection.
It’s a very good time to begin construction or to sell real estate and it’s a very good time for communication with influential people.
Be careful of your knees during this time. Also, be careful to not expose yourself to colds. This is also a time when skin ailments can flare up.
It is a very good time to do anything that involves really utilizing your will power.

I know it sounds impossible but that’s exactly what happened to me.

Can you believe these pictures? Even after all these years, I’m still amazed.
And you have to understand that I struggled with my weight for over 40 years. I was on every diet in the world — Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Nutri System, South Beach, Stillman Diet, the Dolly Parton soup diet, vegetarian, vegan, I went raw for 6 months, juice fasts, etc., etc. I had a personal trainer 3 times per week for over 2 years, I bought all the exercise machines, I took all kinds of over the counter diet pills, etc. etc, etc.. – I would lose the weight but always gain it back (plus more) the minute I would even start looking at food again, all the while hating my body and wanting it to be different.
I started ballet dancing at the age of 3 and I have a vivid memory of my body being criticized when I was 8 years old. I was put on my first diet at the age of 12. And looking back, I wasn’t fat! I just wasn’t tall, and I didn’t have the long arms and long legs and long torso that you need to be a ballet dancer. So that criticism at the age of 8 and the relentless monitoring of what I ate began a life-long struggle that showed up as me hating my body.
Every day I used to wake up and think about what would I eat today. My good mood or bad mood at the beginning of the day was determined by what the scale said. I recently found something I’d written in one of my journals “95% of my unhappiness comes from my weight”. Isn’t that so sad?
And then suddenly, something happened. I moved to Sedona, Arizona in 2001 and in 2002 I started Sedona Soul Adventures. One of the wonderful things for me is that I have access to all these incredible healers and practitioners in Sedona and I’ve been doing my own personal healing work with them since 1999. I had been doing a lot of work around loving myself, loving every part of my personality, but I wasn’t focusing that much on my body. And one day as I was meditating, something came together for me and I just really “got it” that there was nothing wrong with my body except that I wanted it to be different and I felt so betrayed by it.
Somehow something converged and I just decided to stop.
I decided to stop all the crazy dieting.
I decided to stop all the neurotic working out.
I decided to stop thinking about it and worrying about it and talking about it.
I figured I would balloon up to 250 pounds. But that’s not what happened. Over the next few months, suddenly 40 pounds melted away. I wasn’t dieting, I was eating whatever I wanted and I was only going hiking with my dog, because I love to go hiking with my dog here in beautiful Sedona. I went from a size 14 to a size 6. It just melted away.
And as I looked back I realized what had happened. That I had finally started loving my body. That the processes I was doing for loving myself had taken hold and started showing up in the most tangible way possible with how my body looks and feels.
So now I teach that to other people. Each January, I do a 6 week Teleseminar on “The Only Diet That Works – Loving Your Body into the Weight and Health You’ve Always Wanted”. I do it with two other people, Rick Reynolds (who has lost and kept off 80 pounds for over 6 years) and Leslee Vogal, who has over 20 years experience herbal medicine and Ayurveda. It’s always so much fun and so inspiring.
